4 free ways to create a better onboarding experience

"In one word, what was your first day like?"

STRESSFUL!

You’re not alone. So many people describe their first day with words like awkward, overwhelming, or confusing. Those first day nerves are normal, whether it’s your first or fifteenth job, but when we design our onboarding experience with people in mind, it can make all the difference between anxiety and excitement.

So, when I've asked people what would’ve made your first day better, here are some of the best (and simplest) ideas I’ve heard…and they’re all free!

📞 Pick up the phone

“What do I wear? What time should I arrive?” A quick chat before day one can calm the nerves, answer those questions and take away the guess work. It’s a simple gesture that makes a big difference.

⌚️ Start time

Sitting in rush hour traffic is stressful any day, but on your first day? Ugh 😒
Move the start time back 45 minutes. It gives new joiners a breather and gives you, as a manager, time to prepare for their arrival. After all, you only get one chance to make a first impression too.

🙋 Create intros

Getting to know the people is just as important as getting to know the job. Arrange a handful of formal intros (1:1s, project meetings) and informal ones (team lunches, virtual coffee catch-ups) to help them get started. Because some find this easier than others.

🏅 Set up for success

Everyone wants to be successful. A simple 30-60-90 day plan helps give focus and direction - what to learn, who to meet, and how to make an impact. It’s your chance to show people what “good” looks like from the start.

And yes… all of this works whether onboarding is onsite or remote.

Let’s make first days something people actually look forward to.

I’d love to help you understand what your people really feel about onboarding right now - or design experiences that leave them excited from day one.
